Safe Streets - Sustainable choices - Strong community
SALT Pt Chev is a community organisation based in Pt. Chevalier, Auckland.
The organisation was started by a group of residents concerned about the effects of traffic on our community and our environment.
We want our neighbourhood to be a place where:
- It is fun and safe for all of us to walk and cycle on Pt Chev streets.
- We choose to use sustainable forms of transport - bus, train, bike, walking - as often as possible.
- We are more connected to the people in our street and in the wider community.
Take the SALT Challenge today! - Your chance to make a real difference.
Has your partner taken the challenge? Encourage them to sign-up today! What about your Pt Chev friends and neighbours?

Footpath Journeys
By Ruth MacClure
Most days my two daughters (aged 7 & 6) and myself walk, cycle, scooter, and or rollerblade from our home at the Great North Rd end of Kiwi Rd to Pt Chevalier Primary School. Each trip I constantly remind my daughters to pay attention to drive ways - “look and listen for driveways”, “watch out for driveways” I holler out as they cruise down a hill in front of me. I have noticed that generally speaking most people come out of their driveways carefully and slowly – however they mostly reverse which makes visibility of (my beloved) daughters very difficult for the driver. I would LOVE it if residents would think to back into their driveway when they come home, so that they could come out forwards allowing them much better
visibility.
We will be holding the meeting in the Resource Room at Pt Chev school
A transport planner from Auckland City will be talking about the council's plans to improve walking and cycling conditions in our neighbourhood.
Come along, learn what the plans are, and have your say.
All welcome!

Footpaths are for People - 27th October 2006
Here is the review of the first few months of The SALT Challenge that was presented to our sponsors in December 2006.
SALT has been in existence for almost a year now and we’re getting things done!

- •We've created the great new logo that you can see on this newsletter
- •We've set up our website - check it out at www.salt.net.nz
- •We have continued to expand our network of Pt Chev Street Reps
Where to from here?
Our survey results are clearly showing us residents are concerned about cars coming out of driveways and the risk this creates for pedestrians and cyclists. Our first SALT action will be a driveway awareness campaign. We are planning to launch this campaign at a public event in October this year.
We are also launching the SALT Challenge in October. The SALT Challenge will support residents to drive considerately and less often. This will make our streets safer for walking and cycling.
